James W. Johnson, age 73, of Homestead, Pennsylvania, passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2026.

Born on November 13, 1952, in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, James was the son of the late James W. Johnson and Ella Mae Brown Johnson.

James was a resourceful man with a natural ability to repair, build, and figure things out. If something was broken, chances were that he could fix it, or at least he was determined to try. His final place of employment was Hampton Inn, where he worked as the chief engineer.

James was direct, strong-willed, and opinionated, and if you knew him, you knew he usually believed he had the right answer. Behind that confident personality was a man who genuinely loved sharing his knowledge and life experiences. He believed there was always something to learn, something to teach, and wisdom worth passing down. As the years went by, his outlook on life began to soften. The man who once approached the world with firmness grew a little more patient, understanding, and forgiving. He learned that life wasn't always about being right, but sometimes about showing grace, accepting people as they are, and appreciating the time spent with those he loved.

As the only boy growing up with five sisters, James was surrounded by strong women from the very beginning. Life later blessed him with five daughters of his own, giving him ten special women to hold dear and protect. He was never short on someone to love, protect, offer advice to, or occasionally disagree with.

James loved his family. He was especially proud of his five daughters and wanted nothing more than to see them become strong, educated, independent women. He encouraged them to pursue their education, think for themselves, and build lives that brought them happiness and fulfillment. He wanted his daughters to know their worth, stand on their own two feet, and never be afraid to make their own way in the world. He also shared nearly 23 years of his life with his daughters' mother Doretha Turner, a woman who held a special place in his heart. Although their journey together eventually took different paths, the love he carried for her remained. Their years together were an important chapter in his life, filled with memories and a bond that time and circumstance could not erase.

James found joy in life's simple pleasures, like golf, music appreciation, history, staying on top of politics, finding great movies and TV shows to watch, and cheering on his beloved Pittsburgh sports teams. He was particularly passionate about the Pittsburgh Steelers.

James leaves to cherish his memory his five beloved daughters, Tiffany Turner, Catherine Bell (Jeremiah Alford), Jamie Johnson (Joshua Townes), Monica Darden (Demetreus Darden), and Ashley Johnson; his two sisters, Lynn Johnson and Loretta Moss; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family members and loved ones.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his mother-in-law Shirley Turner, his three sisters, Catherine Gilchrist, Lisa Jackson, Paula King, and his nephew William Turner.

Though his voice may now be silent, his wisdom will continue to echo in the hearts of his daughters, his family, and everyone fortunate enough to have known him.

*Dad had two sons whom he was not in contact with, and we’ve never met. We always knew of them, and he would not want them to be left out, so James (JJ) and Edward (Eddie), if you ever see this, he thought of you both, and we’ve looked for you for years.

A memorial gathering to celebrate James's life will take place Saturday, November 14, 2026 from Noon to 2PM at Graff-Nation Funeral and Cremation Service LLC. 220 E. Lincoln Ave. McDonald, PA 15057.
